METAMORPHOSIS

Costume design for Pim Zwier’s historical documentary Metamorphosis, exploring the life and work of 17th-century artist Maria Sibylla Merian.

I developed the costumes for the film’s reenacted scenes, researching and sourcing garments and accessories from multiple rental houses and combining them into historically appropriate looks for the cast.

Some scenes were integrated into reproductions of 17th-century drawings and paintings, while others were filmed in an authentic 17th-century interior. The costumes therefore had to work both as historically accurate reconstructions and as part of the visual language of the original artworks.
